With deep love and sorrow, we announce the passing of Laverne N. Logan, affectionately known as “La La,” who departed this life on March 24, 2026, at the age of 85. She passed peacefully at Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, New York, surrounded by her loving family.

Laverne was born on October 10, 1940, in Jersey City, New Jersey, to her devoted parents, Clifton and Mary Logan. She was raised in a close-knit family alongside her sister Rosemary and her brother Clifton. Laverne is now reunited in eternal rest with her parents, her sister Rosemary Richardson, and her brother Clifton Logan, embraced in heaven by our Heavenly Father.

From an early age, Laverne displayed strength, determination, and a vibrant spirit. She attended Lincoln High School in Jersey City, where she excelled academically, frequently earning Honor Roll recognition. A talented athlete, she played basketball as a guard with a forward’s toughness—known for her physical play and fierce competitiveness that often left opponents wishing for more calls from the referees.

In 1963, Laverne married Herbert Bacon at St. Albans Congregational Church in Queens, New York. Together they built a life and family, welcoming two sons, Anthony (born 1964) and Asa (born 1968). During this time, they operated a delicatessen on Rockaway Boulevard, living above the store while raising their young boys. Though the marriage ended in 1972, Laverne’s devotion to her children never wavered. She later married Howard McGee in 1973; they met while working together at the United States Post Office in Queens. That marriage ended in 1977.

From that point forward, Laverne stood as a pillar of strength, raising her sons as a single mother with unwavering dedication, ensuring they were cared for, guided, and prepared for life.

Laverne built a respected career with the United States Post Office beginning in 1970, where she was known as a dependable and valued worker, earning commendations throughout her years of service.

A woman of deep faith, Laverne was a Christian Protestant and a longtime member of St. Albans Congregational Church, following in her mother’s footsteps. Her favorite scriptures and inspirations included the Lord’s Prayer, the poem “Footsteps in the Sand,” and the comforting words of 2 Thessalonians 2:16–17.

Laverne found joy in life’s simple and meaningful pleasures. She loved traveling, dancing at family gatherings, enjoying good food, movies, going to music concerts and the occasional Broadway play or musical. She was an avid sports fan who cheered passionately for her New York teams—the Giants, Mets, Yankees, and Knicks. One of her cherished memories was taking her young sons to their first Mets games in the late 1970s.

Laverne loved her roles as a sister, cousin, aunt, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She deeply believed in maintaining a close-knit family and treasured time spent with loved ones. When her children were young, she would take them to visit her sister Rosemary’s family and her first husband Herbert’s family in Manhattan and Poughkeepsie, New York. During the summers, Laverne and her sister Rosemary would gather their children together and take them to amusement parks and other fun destinations, creating lasting memories filled with laughter and joy.

As a grandmother, Laverne continued that tradition of love and togetherness. Her granddaughters often spent summers with her and their uncle Asa, where she would once again plan outings to amusement parks, restaurants, the beach, and other enjoyable places—sometimes including their cousins—ensuring those summers were just as special.

Laverne was also a devoted caregiver to her youngest son, Asa, after he became disabled at the age of 20 due to a spinal cord injury from a car accident. When he returned home from the hospital and rehabilitation, she lovingly took on the role of full-time caregiver for many months until professional home care services were arranged. Even in the years that followed, whenever there were gaps in care, Laverne stepped in without hesitation, performing skilled tasks and continuing to provide unwavering support and love.

Above all, Laverne will be remembered for her strength, her compassion, her devotion to family, and her enduring spirit.

Laverne is survived by her sons, Anthony and Asa; her granddaughters, Shakeera and Naquasiah; and her great-grandsons, Gabriel and Elias. She is also survived by her nephews, nieces, and many cousins who will cherish her memory.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 25, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at New Leaf Cremation, 3930 Long Beach Rd., Island Park, NY 11558 (Ph: 855-770-3777). A repast will follow at 3:00 p.m. at Outback Steakhouse, 3939 Long Beach Rd., Island Park, NY 11558 (Ph: 516-897-8989).
