Levi Winston Weekes

November 8, 1945 — December 24, 2023

Levi Weekes AKA "The Entertainer" and "Styler John" was born on November 8, 1945 in Cayon St. Kitts. He was the sixth of eleven children born to Emily Bussue Moving. He attended the Cayon Junior school in the late 50's and his zeal to learn showed that he aspired to be successful in every area of his life. His talents and love for the arts was observed at an early age when he attended the Boy Scout Jamboree hosted in Trinidad in 1961. He was given the opportunity to display his skills at this event. Among his numerous credits, he excelled in sports in his early years when he played soccer and cricket for the Cayon team (left arm spin bowler & captain). He also played for the St. Kitts National Cricket team in the 60's and 70's.

This talented singer and composer became the first National calypso king of St. Kitts/Nevis in 1970/1971. Ever since his impressive pieces, "The meaning of Black Power and Judge Calypso" in December of 1970, Levi captured the eyes and ears of the Federation's calypso community as "The Entertainer". At that time, the legendary calypsonian and song writer was known for his songs of message that often contained scathing social and political commentary.

He managed to claim the Calypso crown for two consecutive years. His second victory was claimed with the songs "Back to Cultivation" and "a letter to the Premier".  Most of his compositions are songs of message that can motivate and empower people to do great things. He believed that one of the best ways to reach others is by music and calypso is one effective way that can be achieved.  Levi gives credits to the great calypsonians who inspired him such as; King Arrow of St. Kitts, Sparrow, Bommer and the Mighty Duke.

Levi also enjoyed farming. He was very happy working in his garden planting vegetables. He was also very proud of the crops that he harvested from his garden and often showed them off in pictures to family and friends. He often spoke about the 50's and 60's when the people of St. Kitts planted ground provisions and worked the ground to feed themselves.

Levi loved his country and was very proud to be a Kittitian. He was actively involved in several initiatives for promoting and building his community. He firmly believed in giving back to his community and donated time, resources, and efforts to improve his beloved Village of Cayon.  Although he has lived in Long Island New York for over 40 years he  never forgot his identity.
