Shirley was preceded in death by her parents and siblings Danny Thompson, Ashlyn Dumile, and her older brother Keston "Sonny" Simon of Long Beach, NY. Shirley is survived by her devoted husband, Huckerby 'Willie" Williams, her sons Bryan Thompson, Wendell Williams, and Alvin Williams of Long Beach NY, and daughters Wendy Williams of Baldwin NY, and Maureen Williams of Savannah, Georgia, and daughter-in law Carol Thompson of Long Beach, NY. She is also survived by her siblings Lystra Ryce, Rosemarie Thompson, Marlene Mitchell, Maria Thompson of Long Beach, NY; Peter Thompson, Japan, Lydia Vinson, Clarksville Tennessee; and Jackie Baptiste, London, England; and countless other brothers and sisters in the Faith.
Shirley's life journey took her across continents. In the early 1960s, she ventured to the United Kingdom, where she met and married Willie. There, she pursued academic and financial opportunities, eventually working as a nurse's assistant at Hammersmith Hospital. In 1970, Shirley and her growing family migrated to the United States, settling in Long Beach, New York.
Throughout her life, Shirley exhibited remarkable talent and passion. She was not only a skilled nurse's assistant but also a talented hairstylist and seamstress. She learned her craft of hair weaving in London, England in the 60's. Her creative talents extended to pioneering the art of hair weaving in New York during the 1970s, showcasing her multifaceted abilities. Shirley's home salon became a haven where she weaved strands of hair with precision, bringing joy and beauty to countless clients.
Shirley's compassion knew no bounds. She was an active member of the Jehovah's Witness Long Beach congregation for decades, dedicating her time to preaching God's word and distributing the Awake and Watchtower magazines. Her commitment to her faith was unwavering, evident in her regular attendance at Kingdom Hall meetings and conventions.
In addition to her professional and spiritual pursuits, Shirley cherished her time in nature. She had a green thumb and took great pride in her garden, which bloomed with vibrant sunflowers and tulips, reflecting her love for beauty and life.
Shirley's impact transcended the confines of her own household. In her formative years in Trinidad, she gracefully assumed the mantle of caregiver, guiding and nurturing her younger siblings with remarkable skill and dedication. Despite facing modest means, her boundless love, kindness, and unwavering devotion became instrumental in shaping their paths toward successful futures.
This same depth of compassion and warmth radiated through her role as a grandmother, as she lovingly contributed to the upbringing of her grandchildren. With the same level of care and affection she bestowed upon her siblings, Shirley played a pivotal role in their lives, ensuring they were enveloped in love, support, and guidance.
Shirley's commitment to family extended beyond her siblings and grandchildren. She was a devoted mother, exemplified by her decision to retire in her 50s to care for her son Wendell, who held a special place in her heart. Her selflessness and dedication to those she loved leave an enduring legacy of love and compassion for generations to come.
Her legacy is woven with threads of love, care, and wisdom, touching not only the lives of her children but also leaving an indelible mark on her 10 grandchildren: Nicholas, Krystal, Dejanae, Aaron, Elyssa, Aaliyah, Amario, Tiffany, Terrell, and Timothy.
